THE TIRE ROUND-UP PROGRAM RETURNS

_Kickoff is Saturday, July 22 _

_ _

PHILADELPHIA - The Streets Department is proud to announce the return of
the Tire Round-Up Program. [1] The program serves as one of several
Streets Department programs to support the vision for a more beautiful
and cleaner Philadelphia. The six-week program will take place on the
following Saturdays: July 22 and 29, August 8, 12, 19 and 26. The hours
of operations will be from 9a to 3p each Saturday.

Registered participants are offered a "tire bounty" of $.50 for each
_illegally discarded_ tire they collect and drop off at one of the
designated sites around the city. The tire drop-off limit is 1,000 tires
per group. Reimbursement is limited to up to $500 per registered
participant. Participants are urged to use their proceeds from the Tire
Round-Up Program for worthwhile community projects.

The Tire Round-Up Program is an excellent opportunity for block clubs
and community groups to raise funds and at the same time participate in
neighborhood clean-ups and beautification efforts. To participate in the
program, residents MUST register with the Philadelphia More Beautiful
Committee (PMBC) at 215-685-3981. Only registered Block Captains,
organized community/civic organizations, Town Watch organizations, and
Partnership Recycling Groups are eligible to participate in the Tire
Round-Up Program.

The Program was developed by the Streets Department's Sanitation
Division to address the serious problem of illegally discarded tires in
Philadelphia. Piles of tires pose both a fire and health risk, as they
are highly combustible and provide breeding grounds for rodents and
mosquitoes. By collecting illegally discarded tires and properly
disposing of them, participants help to eliminate the health risk and
reduce the amount of materials that contribute to the deteriorating
conditions of our city neighborhoods.

Tires from auto repair shops, mechanic shops, car dealers and private
storage lots are required to be disposed of by the merchant for a fee.
These tires will not be accepted at the drop off sites.

Since the inception of the program in 1995, registered participants have
collected over 250,000 illegally discarded tires. For more information,
please email tireroundup at phila.gov.
