[MNC-list] Fw: [Predicted Schuylkill Flooding Thursday]

The remnants of Hurricane Ida are predicted to pass over us Wednesday and Thursday and bring a fair amount of rain to the region.

As a result, the Schuylkill is predicted to crest at 12.8 feet Thursday evening.

These flood levels are for the river just above boat house row. Because of the geography of our area the flood levels here in Manayunk are more dramatic.

Last August, Hurricane Isaias came through with a flood crest at 13.3 feet. This resulted in flooding at our favorite water park, Venice Lofts, as well as flooding from Shurs and Main to close to Ridge and Main.

We can probably expect similar, if slightly less, flooding.

During Hurricane Isaias the river level, downstream, went from 6 feet, before any rain to the mentioned 13.3 feet.

Here in Manayunk, the river level (at the Green Lane bridge) went from 12 feet to 35.6 feet.

So a rise of 7.3 feet down near boat house row was a rise of 23.6 feet here.

Doing some simple math shows our rise is over 3 feet for every 1 foot downstream. This makes a difference. These are only predictions but we can expect the flood level to be lower than last year by 1-2 feet.

The big flood in 2014 reached about 13.8 feet downstream. We didn't have the measuring station at Green Lane yet but you could extrapolate that the crest at Green Lane would have been about 38 feet, 3 feet higher than last year and 4-5 feet higher than predicted this year.
